| General description of ENSG
Born in 1908, the ENSG became Ӄcole
Nationale Supérieure d'Ingénieurs” in
1948.
It is an engineering school funded by the French Ministry of Education, Research
and Technology.
The ENSG is one of the founders of the National Polytechnique Institute of Lorraine
(INPL) along with six other engineering schools and a school of Architecture.
Situated in Nancy, the ENSG has a central position in the European community.
Over a period of three years the ENSG trains general engineers who acquire in
depth knowledge in geosciences : it is the only engineering school in France
to offer this type of training.
Moreover, the ENSG also delivers other french diplomas like BTS (technician
level), MASTER. It is also involved in various
specialized trainings (post-graduate or adapted to firms demand).

The Institut National Polytechnique
de Lorraine (INPL) was
founded in 1971 at the same time as the other national Polytechnic
Institutes of Grenoble and Toulouse. INPL is a public establishment
of a scientific, cultural, and professional nature, and enjoys
University status.
INPL is a federation of seven "Grandes Ecoles" (Engineering
schools) which award the engineering
diploma after five years of further studies following the
baccalaureate, and a rigorous
entry selection procedure described in the information section
on the schools.
These seven schools are:
- Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Agronomie et des Industries
Alimentaires (ENSAIA)
(The Engineeering School of Agronomy and Food Sciences)
- Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Electricité et de Mécanique
(ENSEM)
(The Engineering School of Electricity and Mechanics)
- Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Géologie (ENSG)
(The Engineering School of Geology)
- Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Industries Chimiques (ENSIC)
(The Engineering School of the Chemical Industries)
- Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Nancy (ENSMN)
(The Engineering School of Mines of Nancy)
- Ecole Européenne d'Ingénieurs en Génie des Matériaux
(EEIGM)
(The European Engineering School in Materials)
- Ecole Nationale Supérieure en Génie des Systèmes Industriels
(ENSGSI)
(The Engineering National School of Industrial Systems)
to which was added by convention in 1992,
- Ecole d'Architecture de Nancy (EAN) (The Nancy School of Architecture)
Research
Fundamental and applied research are particular strong points of INPL–Nancy’s
schools and laboratories, which produce more than 150 doctoral theses and 1300
scientific publications and conference communications each year. A strong network
of industrial relations offers not only possibilities for effective placement
and employment of INPL–Nancy students but also significant opportunities
for collaboration and technology transfer through more than 500 active research
contracts.
INPL has 25 research laboratories and 160 full-time resarchers. Research at
INPL concentrates on the following sectors :
Agronomy-Biotechnologies and Food sciences
Chemistry, chemical engineering, process engineering
Electrotechnics, Electronics, Automation
Mechanical and Civil Engineering
Material Sciences
Geosciences and Environmental sciences
Computer sciences
Industrial system Engineering
Architecture
INPL has :
4,000 students, of which 1,000 are PhD Students and 10% are from abroad (more
than 50 nationalities represented)
400 teaching staff
160 researchers
430 administrative staff and technicians
25 research laboratories
1 vocational training department
1 common documentation service (libraries)
Admission of students to INPL
Students
can be admitted to ENSAIA, ENSEM, ENSG, ENSIC and ENSMN in their 1st year :
• by way of a national competitive entry examination :
. after preparatory classes (2 years after the French Baccalaureate)
. at DEUG level (university diploma obtained two years after the French Baccalaureate)*
• by direct selection in the 2-year polytechnic preparatory programmes,
• to holders of the DUT (diploma awarded by University Institutes of Technology
(IUTs).
A few students (10%, who have obtained a post graduate diploma in a university
(four years after the baccalauréat), can be admitted into second year
in one of the five schools.
For EEIGM, ENSGSI and EAN recruitment is specific
- in 1st year : by national competitive examination ; open to holders of the
baccalaureate
- in 3rd year: on an individual dossier and interview basis for degree holders.
* EMN only recruits, in parallel with preparatory classes, at degree level
(three years after the baccalaureate).
Duration of studies
The duration of studies is three years for all the schools, with the exception
of ENSGSI and EEIGM where it is five years. In all INPL schools, The engineering
diploma is therefore awarded five years after the French baccalaureate.
Location
INPL is established in two locations :
ENSAIA, ENSEM and ENSG are on the Brabois-Vandoeuvre campus (about 5 km from
the town centre),
EMN, EEIGM, ENSIC, ENSGI and EAN are in the centre of Nancy.
The town of Nancy
Nancy along with its surrounding suburbs has some 350,000 inhabitants, and
is located 60 km from Metz, 300 km from Paris, 100 km from Luxembourg, and
140 km from Saarbrücken. Nancy has a long-standing tradition as a university
town covering every discipline. There are 42,000 students, including 4,000
from other countries, spread over the universities. Nancy is also an important
industrial and commercial centre.
The climate in Nancy is midly continental, hot summers, cold winters (in January,
the peak temperature is -5æC and it often snows. In July, the peak temperature
is approximately 30æC permitting various sporting activities such as winter
sports in the Vosges Mountains, sailing and rowing..... |
