FACILITIES AND SCIENTIFIC
ENVIRONMENT
The premises of the ENSG alone cover an area of 20 000 m2
(half of them brand new) in Vandoeuvre (Brabois and Pôle
de L'Eau sites). Besides multi purpose classrooms and amphitheatres,
it is endowed with specially equipped rooms for the teaching
of microscopy, mapping, study of rocks, data processing,
languages, and hosts one of the largest libraries in the
country in the field of geosciences.
Courses are taught over a period of six semesters by lecturers
and researchers from the ENSG and also by researchers from
the CNRS (50 people), external lecturers from industries
and universities (over 100 people). One of the singularities
of our school is the emphasis on on-site practical work (6
weeks altogether) studying geological mapping, structural
geology, sedimentology, magmatism and metamorphim.
The lecturers-researchers of the ENSG and the CNRS, the Ph.D
students (about 400 people) carry out their research in the
laboratories of the ENSG or severalmixed units INPL-CNRS
or Henri Poincare University - CNRS and laboratories belonging
to the CNRS federated in the Lorraine Institutes of Geosciences
(ILG) and Mechanical Engineering (ILGM).
The students of the ENSG profit by
their research potential through training periods and practical
works in the laboratories. So they have access to :
- the computers and 3D modeling original softwares of the
GOCAD team (ENSG),
- the apparatus of physical and mechanical measurements in
the laboratory of environmental and geotechnical studies
(LAEGO-ENSG),
- the pilot plant of mineral and industrial waste treatment
of the laboratory for environment and mineral processing
(LEM-ENSG),
- the electron microprobes of the common center for microanalysis
based at Nancy 1 University Henri Poincaré.
In addition, the ENSG students can too have access to other
laboratories and research institutes : Centre de Recherches
Pétrographiques et Géochimiques (CRPG), Centre
de Recherches sur la Géologie des Matières
Premières Minérales et Énergétiques
(G2R), Centre de Recherches en Automatique de Nancy (CRAN),
Laboratoire Structures et Transferts en Milieu Sédimentaire
(LSTS), Centre de Pédologie Biologique (CPB).
The symbiosis of learning and
research which is the cornerstone of teaching at the ENSG
makes Nancy one of the European spearheads in the field of
Geosciences. The resulting network of international exchanges
match the pedagogical challenges of the 21st century that
our school is preparing to face.
